Er zijn niet veel kleurenbeelden uit de oorlog, maar de Maastrichtse fotograaf Alphons Hustinx legde vast hoe de bezetting het dagelijks leven in Amsterdam veranderde.

Het Nederlands Instuut voor OorlogsDocumentatie (NIOD) beheert het dia-archief en heeft het openbaar gemaakt.

Jo Bokma, in de jaren vijftig huisfotograaf van dierentuin Artis in Amsterdam, is donderdag op 95-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat heeft zijn familie zaterdag laten weten.Bokma, die na de oorlog begon als freelance fotograaf, maakte als een van de eersten beelden van de watersnoodramp in 1953.

Tijdens zijn werk voor Artis maakte hij vele films en foto's die onder andere voor onderwijs werden gebruikt. Hij was verder de mede-oprichter van het blad Artis en enige tijd secretaris/penningmeester van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Fotojournalisten.

In het Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam is werk van Bokma te zien. Hij wordt vrijdag in Amsterdam gecremeerd.

The National Press Photographers Association is pleased to announce that Getty Images photojournalist John B. Moore will be a keynote speaker at NPPA’s 2008 Convergence '08 at the Downtown Marriott in Louisville, KY, on May 30 and 31, 2008. Moore was named Photojournalist of the Year (Large Market) in NPPA’s annual Best Of Photojournalism contest, the largest photojournalism contest in the United States. On April 24, 2008, Moore was also awarded the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club of America.

Moore’s award-winning Best Of Photojournalism portfolio included his stunning coverage of the assassination of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and a heartbreaking photograph from Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. In that photograph, a grieving Mary McHugh stretched prone on her slain fiancé’s grave, a soldier killed in battle in Iraq. Moore will be presented with his Best Of Photojournalism awards on May 31 during NPPA's annual Honors & Recognition ceremony, which wraps up Convergence '08 in Louisville.

The Slovenian documentary photofestival Fotopub presents its 2008 program. Chris de Bode, the new program director of the 8th edition of the photofestival has announced the Fotopub 2008 line up.

The masterclass will be in the hands of Dutch photographer Robert Knoth. Apart from Slovenian photographers like Arne Hodalic, workshops will be hosted by Dieter Telemans, Yann Mingard, Steve Forrest, Tiziana Faraoni, Michael Regnier, John Novis and Chris de Bode.

In het kader van de overzichtstentoonstelling "60 jaar Magnum" bij het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam heeft L.J.A.D. Creyghton een gesprek met de Belgische Magnum-fotograaf Carl de Keyzer die in 1990 als aspirant-lid mocht toetreden tot dit prestigieuze fotografencollectief.

Als documentaire fotograaf werkt De Keyzer vooral aan langlopende projecten die hij eens in de drie, vier jaar in boekvorm publiceert. Dat heeft inmiddels een reeks opgeleverd die begon met het in 1987 verschenen India. Daarna volgden ondermeer Homo Sovieticus, God Incorporated en Zona, en onlangs verscheen het boek Trinity.

Dit gesprek wordt in twee delen uitgezonden. Deel 1 op woensdagavond 30 april en deel 2 op woensdagavond 7 mei.

Can photographs change the world? Not many pictures even provide definitive answers to our questions about the world. Photography is too often a simple channel for information and the four basic "W's" of the picture caption are the cornerstone of photojournalism: Who, What, Where and When. But to this the ambitious photojournalist can hope to add the fifth element, Why.

The jury of the 2008 World Press Photo competition put special emphasis on this last component and in their judgement the very best of last year's photojournalism went beyond giving us plain facts or of attempting simplistic answers. In every category they looked for pictures that did something more difficult - they were looking for images that would stimulate our curiosity, challenging the viewer to read the captions, inspiring us to think and to develop our own responses to the issues raised. As Gary Knight, the jury Chair, writes in his foreword to the yearbook, these awards do not mark the end of a process, but rather a new beginning from which we the viewers can take fresh knowledge as a foundation on which to build our understanding of the world around us.

Martijn Beekman, winnaar van de Zilveren Camera 2007, komt op uitnodiging van het 85 jaar bestaande Fotografencollectief de Zutphense naar Zutphen.

Zaterdag 3 mei zal hij in het Stedelijk Museum belangstellenden meenemen in zijn wereld van journalistieke fotografie. Beekman won de Zilveren Camera met een foto van drie, in een auto zittende VVD-ereleden, die zojuist met Rita Verdonk over de crisis binnen de VVD-fractie hadden gesproken.

De lezing begint om 14.00 en duurt twee uur.

In Kijkduin opent woensdag de buiten-expositie "Gezichten van de Wereld". De tentoonstelling is tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met het blad National Geographic en bestaat uit tachtig foto's. Op de boulevard zijn panelen geplaatst die 's avonds verlicht zullen worden. De tentoonstelling luidt het begin in van het evenementenseizoen in de badplaats Kijkduin.

Twelve young photographers will come together with a group of masters for the 15th annual World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass. The masterclass will be held from 8 to 13 November 2008 in Foam_Fotografiemuseum, Amsterdam.

The 12 participants were selected among 132 candidates who had been nominated to submit their portfolios. During the masterclass meeting in November, the participant photographers will interact with six prominent experts, discussing technical, journalistic and ethical aspects of their work.

The participants were selected by an independent, international selection committee consisting of José Azel (Cuba), president Aurora Photos, Magdalena Herrera (France), art director National Geographic France, Marloes Krijnen (the Netherlands), director Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, Erik Refner (Denmark), photographer Berlingske Tidende and Massimo Siragusa (Italy), photographer Agenzia Contrasto.

The purpose of the masterclass is furthering young and talented photographers' insight in photojournalism. In preparation for the meeting, the participants will execute a photo essay on one single theme, which for this year is: ‘Balance'. The essays will be discussed during sessions with the masters and edited into a publication.

Since the inception of the Joop Swart Masterclass in 1994, a total of 164 young photographers have participated in the program, many of them moving on to establish themselves as today's leading photojournalists. In the 2008 World Press Photo contest, 14 of the 59 prizewinners - including Tim Hetherington, winner of the Premier Award - were former participants in the Joop Swart Masterclass.

Nikon's D300 and D3 digital SLRs each won a gong at this year's European awards organised by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA). And judges voted the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens the Best Professional Lens.

He quit his job to continue covering the Afghanistan conflict, got shot during an ambush but went back again six months later. Photojournalist John D McHugh explains why he has returned once more.

Het zijn zelden vrolijke beelden die de prestigieuze persfotografieprijs winnen. Dode kinderen, huilende vrouwen en schietgrage mannen, vaak tegen een achtergrond van uitgebrande huizen. Het zijn zelden vrolijke beelden die de World Press Photo winnen, een van de meest prestigieuze persfotografieprijzen ter wereld. Vanaf morgen kan het publiek de grote winnaars van 2007 bekijken in de Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, de plek die de tentoonstelling traditiegetrouw het eerst aandoet. En ook dit jaar verbeelden winnende fotografen het beest in de mens en de onrechtvaardigheid in de wereld.

Met het werk van de Engelsman Tim Hetherington, winnaar van de World Press Photo 2007, is iets heel bijzonders aan de hand. Zijn sobere beeld van een Amerikaanse soldaat in Afghanistan is niet eens scherp, en daarom in technische zin ondergeschikt aan de andere inzendingen. Maar dat kon de jury niets schelen. Deze onscherpe soldaat, ergens in in een loopgraaf in Afghanistan, grijpt de kijker aan. Dit is geen stoere vechtmachine, en hier is geen goed of kwaad te bekennen. Wat rest is een intiem beeld van een jongen die de wanhoop en vermoeidheid van een hele natie lijkt te verbeelden.

Fotograaf Tim Hetherington heeft de prijs voor de World Press Photo in ontvangst genomen in Amsterdam. Hij kreeg de onderscheiding van prins Constantijn in het Muziekgebouw aan het IJ.

Hetherington kreeg een bedrag van 10.000 euro en een nieuwe camera. De winnende foto stond in een reportage die Hetherington maakte in opdracht van het Amerikaanse tijdschrift Vanity Fair.

Op de foto is een vermoeide Amerikaanse militair in Afghanistan te zien.

In totaal zonden 5019 fotografen uit 125 landen werk in voor de 51ste editie van World Press Photo. De jury deelde in tien categorieën prijzen uit.

De amateur-wielerklassieker Arno Wallaard Memorial heeft zaterdag in Meerkerk een dramatisch slot gekregen. Bij de finish raakte persfotograaf Hans Roest ernstig gewond toen wielrenner Cornelius van Ooijen als winnaar over de finish kwam en met hoge snelheid tegen Roest aanbotste.

Roest, freelance persfotograaf voor het AD, klapte achterover tegen een stoeprand aan. Hij moest ter plekke worden gereanimeerd en werd daarna in kritieke toestand naar het Universitair Medisch Centrum in Utrecht overgebracht. Zijn situatie is zorgwekkend. Wielrenner Van Ooijen kon na een controle in het ziekenhuis in Gorinchem weer naar huis.

Zondag heb ik me toch even naar het Amsterdamse Felix Meritis gesleept voor de World Press Photo Award Days. In het knetterbenauwde zaaltje moesten vele bezoekers naar adem happen, wat waarschijnlijk meer veroorzaakt werd door de gebrekkige luchtverversing dan door de getoonde foto's. Je vraagt je ook af wat Felix Meritis jaarlijks met al het gemeentelijke subsidiegeld doet: behalve de naam doen ook de voorzieningen aan 2000 jaar geleden denken (en dat is dan nog een belediging voor de Romeinen). Terecht dat de Amsterdamse Kunstraad adviseert de toelage in te trekken.

Maar terug naar de Awards Days. Terwijl Adriaan Monshouwer wijselijk verkoos buiten te verpozen (met zijn gegroefde gelaat en zonnebril kan hij zo met Bart Chabot, Martin Bril en Jan Mulder op toernee) werden binnen foto's getoond van fotografen als Cédric Gerbehaye, John Moore en Pieter ten Hoopen, die in de wandelgangen het fraaiste compliment van de dag kreeg van Stanley Greene die zijn foto's bestempelde als "poetry". Dergelijke wellevendheid was bij het ingeschakelde personeel van World Press Photo ver te zoeken. Zij lieten zich meermaals van hun meest onbeschofte kant zien en horen, maar kunnen met die instelling zo terecht bij de hoofdstedelijke horeca voor een nieuwe baan.
